A pilot operating a Sunwing flight from Calgary (YYC) to Cancun (CUN) was found slumped over in the cockpit by his crew. Police said the crew discovered the captain slumped over in the pilot’s seat after the gate crew alerted the co-pilot that they noted suspicious behavior.
The pilot was found to have three times the legal limit at 7am on the flight with 99 passengers. According to authorities, after being escorted to an airport office two hours later, the pilot was still “displaying an extreme level of impairment”. The 37 year old pilot has been charged and is due in court on Thursday.
Sunwing released the following statement:
We are very appreciative of our crew’s diligence in handling this very unfortunate matter and we are very apologetic for any upset that this has caused and would like to assure our customers that safety remains our utmost priority.
