Let’s take a walk down frequent flyer memory lane and head back to a time when the Citi AAdvantage cards were churnable, one could earn 25,000 AAdvantage miles for switching home phone service to MCI (several times), and AOL AAdvantage’s Opinion Place had just gone live.
This post is part of a new “blast from the past mileage promos and hacks” post that we’ll share each Tuesday. Check out last week’s post here.
It was early 2000 and my mileage obsession was just kicking into full-gear. I did my best to keep up, following along on WebFlyer & FrequentFlier, while using my parent’s phone lines and credit histories to earn the miles. AOL, the “internet” at the time to most, teamed up with AAdvantage to form AOLAAdvantage Rewards and Opinion Place.
After taking a survey of 15 minutes or less, Opinion Place awarded members 150 AAdvantage miles or AOL service credits, CDs, books, etc. In 2002, the AOLAAdvantage moniker was dropped, and Opinion Place began awarding members up to 300 AAdvantage miles for surveys.
From 2000-2004, I remember consistently taking the surveys every 14 days in order to earn the 150-300 miles. Starting in 2006, the offers began dropping to 50 miles per survey and I no longer bothered with the site. I didn’t need the surveys to keep my account active as I was now flying on AA and had my own Citi AA card.
Opinion Place has come and gone, but you can continue to earn AAdvantage miles for your opinions via Miles for Opinions. The company has been offering a 250 sign-up bonus for some time, but I’ve simply not had time to register and take a survey. The bonus is payable after completing your first survey.
Last week I did just that – registration was under two minutes and I selected a survey that took under 5 minutes (but of course awarded a smaller number of miles, I simply wanted to trigger the 250 miles).
Points will take 4-6 weeks to post, but the site has already properly tracked the 310 that I earned today:
When will I next have time to take any of the other available surveys listed above that require 10-48 minutes? Who knows but 310 miles for under 10 minutes today was nice!
