Earlier this month, El Al announced an agreement for up to 15 B787 Dreamliners as part of the largest fleet renewal plan in the airline’s history. No word on which 787 variant the airline is going with, but they did confirm 15 buy/lease arrangements as well as the purchase rights for 13 additional 787s. The jets will be used to replace 747-400 and 767-300ER models predominately used on routes to the US and Canada.
CEO David Maimon said: “I am proud to announce the largest fleet renewal plan in the history of EL AL. The Board of Directors today approved negotiations with the Boeing Company for the purchase and lease of 15 aircraft during the coming five years. This step is expected to be a major breakthrough in optimization of our route network as well as in customer service and the flight experience.
“During the next five years, these aircraft will replace the 747-400 and 767 fleets. They are intended for EL AL’s medium- and long-range destinations (New York, Boston, Toronto, Beijing, Mumbai, South Africa and other destinations). The Dreamliner, the most innovative and advanced aircraft in the world, have many operational advantages including fuel efficiency and low maintenance costs”.
