This morning, Emirates announced that they will be launching a daily service between Dubai and Ft. Lauderdale. The flight will be operated by Boeing 777-200LR aircrafts, which offers three classes of service. The service will commence on December 15, 2016, with the following schedule:
- EK 213: Dubai to Ft. Lauderdale, 0300/1025
- EK 214: Ft. Lauderdale to Dubai, 2020/1940+1
The flight clocks in at 16 hours and 25 minutes from Dubai to Ft. Lauderdale. On the return, it will take 14 hours and 20 minutes from Dubai to FLL. Reservations are already available on Emirates.com.
This will be Emirates’ 11th destination in the US. They currently serve Orlando (MCO), Chicago (ORD), Boston (BOS), San Francisco (SFO), Los Angeles (LAX), Seattle (SEA), Dallas (DFW), Houston (IAH), Washington (IAD) and New York (JFK).
Ft. Lauderdale is a focus city for JetBlue, which flies to almost 50 cities from the airport. JetBlue partners with Emirates for international itineraries, and should be able to provide great feeder service to Emiraes. With the Emirates flight having an early arrival and late departure to/from FLL, passengers should be able to get great connections from around the country, and even from the Caribbeans.
Emirates’ 777-200LR feature three classes of services, with 8 First Class Suites, 42 Business Class seats, and 216 Economy seats. It’s not the most exciting plane in Emirates’ fleet, and doesn’t feature the most exciting onboard product. However, Emirates’ service will likely make many passengers happy for the long flight. Tim Clark, CEO of Emirates, is optimistic about the new service. He said in a press release:
Fort Lauderdale and Miami are two of America’s most exciting destinations for leisure and business travel…Broward County and Dade County combined to host more than 25 million visitors last year, mainly from the United States and Latin America. We anticipate our service will contribute to the economy of South Florida by bringing new travellers to the area from across our route network, at the same time offering greater competitive choice for consumers and new one-stop passenger and air cargo connectivity for the region to the global destinations that we serve. We launched our non-stop Dubai-Orlando service roughly a year ago and its strong performance encouraged us to select Fort Lauderdale as our 11th US destination.
This is indeed exciting news for people in South Florida, since Ft. Lauderdale is with reasonable driving distance from Miami and West Palm Beach. This new Emirates service should be able to offer nice options to Middle East, Africa, and Asia in time for this Holiday season.
Of the three big three Gulf carriers, Qatar Airways also operates at a nearby airport, flying between Doha and Miami.
