KLM is getting ready to serve draft beer on tap beginning this August! The Heineken design team told Fox News that they had to find a way to overcome the prohibition of C02 cartridges in-flight as well as size restrictions.
“Because the air pressure is so much lower in an aeroplane than at sea level, a traditional beer tap will not work as it will only dispense a huge amount of foam,” he said. “We do have dispensers that work on air pressure, but these were too big to fit in a plane. “It was one big jigsaw puzzle, as the keg of beer, the cooling system and the air pressure compressor all had to fit in an airline catering trolley. “In the end we had to leave out one of those pieces to make it all fit, so with pain in our hearts we had to leave the cooling behind.”
Apparently, the taste was not changed and four kegs will be loaded cold onto each flight at AMS using a Thermos flask to keep the beers at the proper serving temperature.
Of course, KLM is not the first to introduce in-flight draft beer, that was ANA back in 2010.

Actually, Northwest Airlines had Heineken kegs in World Business Class in the early 90’s on flights to Frankfurt. It was placed in front of the movie screen (remember those?) and after the first round, it was self serve. My husband loved sitting in that first row!
