Marriott has told the Connecticut Department of Labor that it intends to layoff approximately 163 employees from Starwood headquarters in Stamford. The Hartford Courant reports that the majority of employees impacted are senior management – “managers, directors, vice presidents, and senior vice presidents.” Marriott says that they will be posting Bethesda, MD based jobs in the coming weeks and that all employees will be welcome to apply.
“We anticipate having a presence in Stamford for the foreseeable future; we will begin to explore longer term options and needs now that we have completed the acquisition. We also anticipate that many associates will find new opportunities within the Company and we will be working closely with them through this process.”
Starwood relocated from White Plains, NY to Connecticut after receiving more than $80M in incentives including tax breaks and loan pardons. Starwood must maintain at least 400 employees in CT through 2019 or the company will have to return all incentives received from 2009-2014. After the 163 layoffs, Stamford staffing will be in the 440 range.
