A few more interesting recaps from the Paris Air Show which was held from June 17th through the 23rd.
- Big orders from Air France for Airbus and Boeing – Air France-KLM cemented a deal to buy 25 Airbus A350-900 airplanes with options to buy an additional 25 A350-900s at a later date. At the same time, Air France-KLM confirmed their order for 25 Boeing 787-9s announced several months ago while also agreeing to purchase another 25 Boeing 787-9s with further options for 25 more. - United Snaps Up New Planes, Delta Makes Do With Old – Bloomberg has an interesting article discussing the differing purchasing strategis at Delta and United. It was a big shopping week in Paris for United Airlines: 35 new Airbus A350s and 20 787s from Boeing. Its rival, Delta Air Lines, didn’t buy a single plane during the air show and has been flying some jets that date to the early 1980s. The starkly differing strategies at the two largest U.S. airlines—a big-time fleet refresher vs. a penny pincher intent on wringing service out of old planes—present a very clear case study. Shareholders and customers are noticing, and so far they don’t appear to prefer that new-airplane smell.

United will have to do a lot more than buy new planes to revive their pathetic ratings and win over FFers. Their service culture is a complete joke. Delta is making money hands over fist, and while I don’t like a lot of what they are doing, I suspect their shareholders do.
If new planes improves UA’s dismal track record of mechanical failures then I will be happier.
