A captain for Indonesian airline Lion Air has been suspended after CCTV video footage shows him attacking a hotel staff member. The video has been shared on Facebook over a million times. In the video, it appears the captain goes behind a reception desk striking a hotel staff member in the face multiple times. The confrontation lasts for about a minute before another employee intervenes.
What was the issue the pilot had? Apparently, it was over an improperly ironed or laundered uniform. Yes, a laundry issue.
Lion Air released the following statement:
Lion Air is very obedient in implementing and prioritizing disciplinary culture on all fronts, including employee behavior or ethics. This policy is in order to prioritize the factors of flight safety and security (safety first).”
Lion Air is a Jakarta-based airline and the second largest low-cost airline in Southeast Asia after AirAsia. The video is the latest piece of bad publicity for Lion Air, which has suffered from a spotty safety record. This includes 2018’s deadliest air accident when a Boeing 737 MAX plunged into the Java Sea, killing all 189 passengers.
