At an awards ceremony on Friday in Ekali, Greece, Star Alliance was named Airline Alliance of the Year for the third time in a row at the Air Transport Awards. The major airline alliances include Star Alliance, Oneworld, and SkyTeam so it’s not like it’s a majorly crowded field to begin with. Star Alliance also happens to be the largest of the three.
The Air Transport Awards recognize excellence and innovation in various categories of the aviation sector.
Airline alliances have grown into large scale and ambitious projects, aiming to “take passengers to every city on earth” (according to Star Alliance’s website). Some of the benefits for customers include codesharing agreements for easier reservations, making connecting flights more streamlined, reciprocal elite benefits across airlines within an alliance, and of course, earning and redeeming miles for airlines within an alliance.
Savvy travelers know that last point well. For instance, redeeming American AAdvantage miles are best used for flights that are not on American.
Of the 27 airlines within the Star Alliance network, there are more than 18,800 daily flights to 1,317 airports in 193 countries.
