Is This What “Tier One” from American Express Is?

by Enoch

Over the past couple of weeks, there were plenty of rumors surrounding American Express’ premium card offerings. Ever since the Chase Sapphire Reserve was introduced, people (myself included) have been making comparisons between the $450-annual fee credit cards available on the market.

There were rumors of American Express launching a brand new card, to potentially draw in a new crowd. However, it looks like for the time being, the only enhancement to the Platinum card is a 5x multiplier on airfare purchases. They also amped up the Business Card on the redemption front, but that was about it.

Among the rumors was a brand new credit card called “Tier One.” Monkey Miles identified a trademark filed by American Express with the name, which led to speculations that Tier One might be the name of the brand new card. It does have a nice ring to it, and while it’s a departure from naming cards with premium metals, still seems very American Express.

Well, we might finally have our answer to what Tier One is. A recent job listing from American Express references the program. However, for those hoping “Tier One” would be a “Chase Sapphire Reserve killer,” well…this might be a bit disappointing.

American Express Tier One looks to be a corporate loyalty program

It looks like Tier One will be a loyalty program for American Express, but will concern only Business and Corporate card holders. Amex does have a pretty solid Business card offering, and their Corporate cards are popular among big firms. That’s not to say that Amex isn’t planning a brand new card for mainstream consumers. But at this point, it seems unlikely that Tier One is the “CSR Killer” many have hoped for. Still, if you run a small businesses, this might be something coming your way in the future.
