Peter Neffenger, the new head of the TSA, testified before a House Oversight subcommittee earlier this month, noting that he sees “a day where the checkpoint looks very different from what it does today. “We’re still largely dealing with the same kind of checkpoint we’ve had for the past decade or more. And I think we’re on the cusp of a very different looking checkpoint experience in the next five years.”
Besides vastly increasing the number of Pre-Check passengers, he envisions a day when passengers will act as their own boarding passes via biometric scans as well as enhanced scanners. “I envision a future where some known travelers will be as vetted and trusted as flight crews.”
Neffenger also anticipates using machines that “screen at the speed of life,” using a system that combines metal detection, non-metallic anomaly detection, shoe x-ray, and explosive vapor detection. “Prototypes of these machines exist, which hold great promise for the traveling public,” he said.
