United Airlines and American Airlines have just announced that they are offering passengers who are concerned about the Zika virus to cancel or postpone their trips and who are traveling to areas affected by the mosquito-borne virus. United Airline’s policy is broader and includes travel to all areas that the Centers for Disease Control are concerned about, while American Airline’s policy covers flights to only four destinations in Central America.
Specifically, American Airlines will allow customers to receive a refund if they provide a doctor’s note stating they are unable to travel to one of 4 cities due pregnancy, including: San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa in Honduras, Panama City, Panama, and Guatemala City, Guatemala.
In case you were not aware, Zika has been linked to an epidemic of birth defects in Brazil and is thought to be spreading to other regions of North and South America. The CDC’s warning focused mostly on pregnant women or those seeking to become pregnant. In the Americas, the CDC is concerned about a list of countries including Barbados, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Paraguay, Panama, Puerto Rico, Saint Martin, Suriname and Venezuela.
