Students all over the Northeast and specifically in the NY/NJ area are set to have no February vacation or a shortened one as a result of missed days from Hurricane Sandy and an early November nor’easter. I think my parents, who both work in schools, are just as upset as the kids! Some school districts have even vowed to take away days from Spring Break as well. Delta, in acknowledgement of the fact that many families plan holidays around the February school vacation calendar, offered an extremely generous travel waiver beginning in November which expires on Feb 15th. Only customers with an original ticket issue date on or before Nov 19, 2012 are eligible and new travel must be completed ANYTIME within one year of the original travel date (a very nice gesture). Impacted dates are February 15-24 and airports include LGA, JFK, EWR, HPN, and SWF. Click here for full details from Delta.

AA, B6, and UA all had similar waivers that expired at the end of 2012.

  1. Please don’t tell my boyfriend about this. He’s a NYC teacher and before the hurricane we booked a flight to Israel for President’s Week. He was told by the school that, if you have previously made vacation plans, that you could go on the trip, so he’s still planning to go to Israel…..but he’s feeling conflicted over this….

Delta announced this waiver back immediately after the NY Schools announced the cancellation of the vacation. Amazing that no one has followed.

jetBlue, United and American Airlines all had waivers available shortly after the schools released the revised calendars, but I believe you had to make changes to tickets by 31 December 2012, so they no longer show up on their website.

In fact, for Delta, this is pretty old news. They have had this waiver out for at least a month.
