US Airways $19.99 Premium Meals in Coach, Now Available on International Routes

by Adam

US Airways today announced the start of their DineFresh program, an order ahead premium meal service for Economy passengers traveling to/from Europe, the Middle East and South America.

As per Hector Adler, vice president, InFlight Services, “With this new option, US Airways becomes the first U.S.-based carrier to offer a premium meal experience for customers in the main cabin.”

DineFresh options include either a vegetarian meal consisting of a Caprese salad with balsamic dressing, Portobello mushroom tortellini, Mediterranean-style appetizer and turtle cheesecake for dessert or a non-veg meal consisting of citrus-marinated chicken skewers, seasonal grilled vegetables, classic shrimp cocktail and creme brulee cheesecake for dessert.  The meals are priced at $19.99 and must be ordered at least 24 hours prior to the flight at dinefresh.usairways.com. All meals come with a choice of complimentary Chilean wines.

Not horrible choices for those sitting in Economy and most likely better than the complimentary service. While US Airways has a whole FAQ on the program, here are some of the more interesting Q&As:
Q. If I order a DineFresh meal, will I still get a complimentary meal? A. Unfortunately we are not able to offer both meal options to our DineFresh customers.
Q. What if I don’t want wine with my meal? A. The price of wine is included with your meal. You are welcome to ask your flight attendant for an alcoholic beverage, such as a beer, spirit or cordial, from our beverage list. Sparkling wine and Stirrings cocktails may not be substituted
Q. What if I upgrade to Envoy? A. If you upgrade within 24 hours of your scheduled departure, we unfortunately won’t have time to cancel your order. However, we’ll find you and serve the meal to you in your new seat. If you upgrade more than 24 hours prior to your departure, you can cancel your order for a full refund. Just return to this site to cancel your order on the Cancel and Refund page.
Speaking of food choices, did I mention I’m excited for my Book the Cook Singapore flight???

Oooh. This looks exciting. I can only hope United follows suit, because I would gladly pay $20 to have those options rather than the free meals they serve on flights to Australia and Europe!

It’s a great option, and well priced compared to similar options available to pax now. Wonder who will be next?! In the last month Westjet and Estonian Air have announced similar options, and of course Air France a few months back.. Nice to see, and hope to see more airlines offering it.

They should do this domestically on flights greater than 2 hours. I would be a frequent customer as I often don’t have time to eat during the day.

So, you get two meals if you upgrade within 24 hours?

I think it’s great idea. Wonder how many people will be willing to pay for the upgraded meal?
