Virgin Atlantic is set to announce the acquisition of 12 Airbus A350-1000 jets, the largest in the A350 XWB wide-body family. The dual-engine jet is set to enter commercial service in 2017. As per Bloomberg, Virgin plans to purchase nine and lease three others for delivery beginning in 2018.
Sadly, this will likely mark the end of Virgin Atlantic’s four-engine B747 (10 currently in service) and A340 (11 currently in service) flying. The more fuel-efficient A350 and B787 (9 delivered so far of 17) jets will take over much of the flying, though the report also notes that Virgin is evaluating the new B777X.
The airline, 49% owned by Delta, has already deferred its order for six A380s until 2018 and its likely that these orders will be converted at some point. Delta has previously ordered 25 A350-900s.
