It is now time to activate the Chase Freedom bonus categories for the second quarter of this year, which are grocery stores and wholesale clubs (more on thee below). Once you have done so, you will be able to earn 5X Chase Ultimate Rewards points per dollar on the first $1,500 spent with those merchants from April 1, 2016 through June 30, 2016. That is an easy 7,500 Chase UR points if you are able to maximize spending on the upcoming quarter’s bonus categories.
We have known for a while that grocery stores would be one of the bonus categories for the upcoming quarter, while wholesale clubs were just revealed as an additional bonus category for the upcoming quarter. According to Chase, wholesale clubs include BJ’s, Sam’s Club and Texas Jasmine.
I have to imagine most of us will be able to easily maximize next quarter’s bonus, particularly if you routinely shop at any of the three aforementioned wholesale clubs.
Activation for the second quarter bonus categories will be open until June 14, 2016. Although there is no reason to wait to activate your bonus categories, points earned for bonus categories will be awarded retroactively if you wait to activate them.
For reference, the bonus categories for the first quarter of this year are gas stations and local commuter transportation. The only bonus category officially announced at this time for the rest of the year is restaurants during the third quarter.
The Chase Freedom is one of my favorite no-annual fee cards. While this is a card I recommend to anyone that already has a Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Ink Plus or Chase Ink Bold or anyone with a good credit score but a young credit history, if you are considering applying for it, do keep in mind that Chase’s 5/24 rule, which is unfortunately applied to this card.
