Mike Dorning, Deputy White House Editor, Bloomberg News, is reporting via his Twitter that the FAA has halted all incoming flights to LaGuardia due to an air traffic control staff shortage caused by the government shutdown.
Here’s the latest status from the FAA:
Due to OTHER / ZDC + ZJX STAFFING and OTHER / STAFFING, there is a Traffic Management Program in effect for traffic arriving La Guardia Airport, New York, NY (LGA). This is causing some arriving flights to be delayed an average of 41 minutes. To see if you may be affected, select your departure airport and check “Delays by Destination”. Due to TM Initiatives:STOP: ZDC STAFFING, traffic is experiencing Gate Hold and Taxi delays between 15 minutes and 29 minutes in length and decreasing.
Bloomberg is reporting that flights at Washington’s Reagan National, JFK, Newark Liberty International and Philadelphia International are also delayed Friday.
The status for Philly (PHL) now reads general departure delays of 1+ hours due to staffing.
Fellow BoardingArea blogger Edward Pizzarello is putting in a huge effort to help TSA and air traffic control employees who are not currently getting paid. Many have families to provide for and the lack of income is really hurting them. These employees are struggling even with simple items like sending their little ones to daycare, diapers for their babies, and even filling up their gas tanks so they can go to work . Ed is in the DC area and is taking supplies to the airport daily. If you want to contribute, whether it’s supplies or gift cards (amazon, Target, gas, etc.) please contact him here. And to top it off, Ed is even matching donations!
