Following the US 2-1 World Cup win over Ghana yesterday, Delta tweeted out congratulations to Team USA which they represented with a picture of the Statue of Liberty. The losing team, Ghana, was represented by a giraffe…except there are no giraffes in Ghana.
There was a huge immediate backlash on social media to the stereotyping and Delta apologized quickly (twice actually). Here’s the latest apology, the first was deleted after Delta noted that they were sorry for the choice of photo in their “precious” tweet instead of previous tweet.

In fairness, the US has only one Statue of Liberty. You’re telling me there’s not even a single giraffe in Ghana?
I seriously think people should get their easily offended panties out of a twist. I’m from Africa and I am not offended by this. There are much worse things to be upset about in this world that actually matter rather than a choice of photos.
I’m more surprised Delta even tweeted. The main Delta Twitter account seldom tweets. #surprised
OMG GIRAFFE, DELTA IS RACIST!!! i can’t even begin to interpret how that is racist as many have said. Stupid: yes. racist: no. Stupider than the tweet is that more than 0 people blogged about it.
