Sayonara, C Series
Airbus has officially renamed the Bombardier C Series aircraft as the Airbus A220. The ‘new’ aircraft will come in two variants – the A220-100 (formerly CS100) and A220-300 (formerly CS300).
The new aircraft targets the 100 to 150 seat single-aisle market and will become the smallest aircraft in the Airbus family.
From Québec to Toulouse
The ‘first’ A220 landed at the Airbus Henri-Ziegler Delivery Centre near Toulouse, France, for a special ceremony. Airbus President of Commercial Aircraft, Guillaume Faury, welcomed Airbus’ newest aircraft to the family:
Today, we are thrilled to welcome the A220 to the Airbus family and are honoured to see it wearing its new Airbus colours for the first time. I pay tribute to all the women and men at Bombardier and the supply chain who have strived over the past years to bring this fantastic aircraft to the world.
Airbus recently acquired 50.1% of the cash-strapped program from Bombardier, the original Canadian manufacturer. Airbus did not invest in the production or development of the aircraft but will begin providing marketing and sales support to existing and future customers.
The ‘New’ Aircraft Is Already in Operation
The CS100 and CS300 – now the A220-100 and A220-300, respectively – are already in operation with Air Baltic, Korean Air, and SWISS International Air Lines.
The new aircraft is a passenger favorite with its popular 2 x 3 seating configuration, spacious overhead bins, and larger windows spaced closer together for enhanced views and increased natural light.
Made in the USA
Airbus said it plans to assemble the A220 aircraft at its plant in Mobile, Alabama. The company expects US-assembled jets to be ready for delivery by mid-2020.
Delta ordered 75 of the CS100 aircraft but has not announced an official delivery date due to the ongoing tariff threats.
