No More Straws at Hyatt Hotels

by Shelli Stein

Those who like drinking beverages with straws will have to make special requests at Hyatt starting in September. There’s a war on plastic straws and now Hyatt is throwing their “straw” hat in the ring; Starting in September, the hotel chain will do away with single-use plastic items, including straws and drink picks.

Hyatt said that straws and picks will only be available upon request, and, in some markets, they’ll introduce options the hotel bills as more sustainable.

“Eliminating plastic straws and drink picks builds on the environmental sustainability programs we have in place and further drives our global efforts to reduce environmental impact,” Frank Lavey, senior vice president of global operations for Hyatt, said in a statement. “This is a meaningful step, and our commitment doesn’t stop with straws and drink picks.”

Back in 2014, Hyatt introduced its 2020 Sustainability Vision with goals such as reducing energy consumption, diverting waste away from landfills and buying sustainable products. Because Americans use a mind-boggling 500 million plastic straws daily, the company has cited waste as a real concern.

Many environmental scientists have warned of potentially long-lasting damage to marine life as a result of plastic waste drifting in oceans. Hyatt now joins Alaska Airlines, which announced in May that it would end beverage service with plastic straws in favor of biodegradable stirring sticks.
