United Premium Transcontinental Service: LAX – BOS?
While no official announcement has been made about enhanced service, United updated its fall/winter schedules over the weekend and the Los Angeles (LAX) to Boston (BOS) route sees a big upgrade: Boeing 757-200 aircraft with flatbed seats.
Beginning Sunday, October 28, the route will switch from mostly 737s to 757-200’s with 16 flatbed seats arranged in a 2 x 2 configuration. One-way fares start at $491 although quickly increase to $600+ the following Monday.
For now, all three daily flights appear to be bookable on the 16J configuration (ex-Continental) international 757-200s. These planes fly routes like Newark (EWR) to Shannon (SNN), Porto (OPO), Edinburgh (EDI) as well as select premium transcontinental routes.
The route is currently served on 737s or 757-300s with the standard domestic first recliners.
Upgraded Amenities?
It’s unclear whether United’s LAX – BOS route will also receive upgraded ‘Premium Transcontinental’ amenities found on the Newark – LAX/SFO and Boston – SFO routes. In addition to flatbed seats, service includes international-like amenities including Saks-branded amenity kits, signature cocktails, and multicourse dining.
Better Economy Plus Experience
Travelers in Economy Plus on premium transcontinental routes enjoy more than just increased legroom. Like American and Delta, United serves complimentary meals and drinks on its Newark – Los Angeles/San Francisco and Boston – San Francisco flights.
While American and Delta serve meals or snacks to all passengers, United only serves meals to passengers seated in Economy Plus.
Competing with JetBlue Mint?
JetBlue offers Mint service up to four times daily on Airbus A321s. Fares can often be found for $499 – $599 one-way.

I was so excited when I saw this on Flyertalk this morning, but dismayed the aircraft serving this route returns to 738s early next year. We’ll see. Premium Serivce would be great.
Argh, you’re right! Testing the waters (skies?) to see how B6 responds perhaps? Loyalty aside, I’d have a hard time choosing “p.s.” over a $499 or $599 Mint fare with 4x daily service…
Don’t waste your time or money. Just on board and no beds LAX-BOS.
United once again are absolutely rubbish. No beds, no lounge access and after paying to access their rubbish lounge, nothing good to eat and no shower ahead of an overnight service claiming to have beds.
