Review: Wynn Las Vegas, Understated Luxury On The Strip

As mentioned in my last post, I was able to stay at the Wynn Hotel Las Vegas for nearly free — thanks to the Wynn Slots App and some iTunes gift cards that I needed to purchase anyway.

In my previous trips to Vegas, I had already experienced the lobby and public areas of the Wynn — and liked what I had seen. I was excited to finally get a chance to stay the night at the property, and provide a full Wynn Las Vegas review.

Wynn is a massive hotel, but when I got there on a Thursday afternoon there was no line at check in.

The person checking me in told me that I didn’t need to pay the resort fee ($39 plus tax) because I booked through the Wynn Slots app. I knew that before I arrived, but it was nice to have it confirmed by the hotel.

However, because I wasn’t paying the resort fee, I had no free internet and couldn’t use the gym. I could use the free WiFi on the casino floor and in the cafes and restaurants. The cellular reception was great in my room. If I did need WiFi, it’s available for purchase for $19.99/day per device. I could use the pool though,  and because the weather was still nice, that’s all I cared about.

My usual practice is to ask for a room on a higher floor. I suspected there’s an additional charge, but it never hurts to ask. They assigned me a room on the 6th floor and there was an “upgrade” available to a higher floor for $35. I never pay for a higher floor “upgrade,” so I got my keys and went to my room.

The Room

Wynn’s rooms are very spacious, bright and beautifully designed. There’s a nice, wide entryway with a huge wall mirror and a good-sized closet. The room itself has a lot of open space, despite a good amount of furniture in the room. The decor is all muted beige tones and classic lines. I wished the room had more of the whimsical touches, bright colors, and flowers you see in Wynn’s public spaces.

The first thing I look for in a room are the outlets. In this day and age, there’s no excuse not to have lots of accessible outlets everywhere in the room. Wynn didn’t disappoint, there’s outlets galore! There were outlets in the alarm clock on one side of the bed and eye-level outlets on the other side. The desk also had a couple of outlets. You’ll have no problem charging your devices.

I loved the king-size bed and the beautiful, crisp, white bedding. The bed was very comfortable, the blackout curtains were blocking the light very well and the air conditioner is very quiet. Sleep quality is the most important thing I look for in a room, and Wynn gets top marks for that.

The room got a ton of daylight and there were excellent overhead lights. I don’t like dark and moody hotel rooms, so this was perfect for me. An in room voice-operated Alexa device could open and close the curtains, turn on the lights and adjust the thermostat with a simple command. This was such a great feature.

The sound insulation cold be better though, I heard my neighbors and their TV on more than one occasion.

There’s no coffee maker in the room and the minibar has electronic sensors. If you move anything for longer than 30 seconds, that item will be charged to your room bill. I know this is pretty standard for Vegas, but I find these electronic minibars annoying nonetheless. I just went to the ice machine, filled the ice bucket and chilled my own water bottle in my free ice.

The Bathroom

The bathroom, just like the room, is huge and very bright. Here too, there was no shortage of outlets. Even the lighted makeup mirror had an outlet. Everything just made sense, the placement of the lights, the vanity with a little stool, the towel bars and hooks, were all well placed and made the bathroom very functional. The water pressure was excellent and there were so many towels!

The toilet was in it’s own little room with a locking door. There was even a built in TV.

The two white plush robes in the bathroom were a nice touch. I only wish U.S. hotels would provide slippers, like a lot of Asian and European hotels. I always have a pair of hotel slippers in my suitcase for that reason.

The Pool and Gym

Wynn’s pool is beautiful! There are actually two round pools connected by a long and narrow rectangle. I’ve seen a few people swimming laps in that part of the pool. A staff member told me that the pool is heated to 80 degrees year round. There are plenty of lounge chairs, towel stands and free ice water. There’s no loud music and no pool parties at the Wynn pool, perfect for me!

Unfortunately, by the time I got there, around 3 p.m., the sun was setting down behind the huge Wynn and Encore buildings, so it was starting to get quite chilly. I am sure the shade is very welcome during the hotter months, I was just unlucky with my timing.

Because I didn’t pay the resort fee I couldn’t use the gym. I peeked through the glass windows and the gym looked really nice, with everything one might need for a workout. I checked it out around 3:30 p.m. and it looked pretty busy.

Breakfast

What I thought the Wynn was lacking were a few good places for breakfast. The concierge directed me to a coffee shop just off the casino floor. But the line there was probably 30 people deep and snaked around the coffee shop and out the door.  I saw a lot of convention goers with their name tags in line, so there’s clearly a demand for breakfast and coffee at Wynn. They only serve coffee and pastries anyway, so I headed to the Terrace Pointe Cafe, a pool-side restaurant. The food was expensive and quite mediocre.

In hindsight, I should have gone to the buffet. On a weekday, it would’ve been only slightly more expensive than what I paid at the restaurant. There aren’t really any other good breakfast options around. The food court at the Fashion Show mall across the street doesn’t open till 11 a.m. It’s probably not a problem for most people visiting Las Vegas, but I am an early riser and I do like my morning coffee.

The Upshot

The rates for my dates were in the $300-$400 range, plus tax and resort fee. I was so happy I spent less than $100 on my discounted iTunes gift cards instead of paying these rates. The Wynn Slots app took a bit of time to master, and I wished I’d found it and the Facebook group a little bit earlier. Nevertheless, I consider this a success – I had to be in Vegas on certain dates and the prices at all hotels, even the more modest ones like The Linq, were very high.

Wynn is a bit too far removed from the more affordable food options. The Venetian, for example, had restaurants and eateries in all price ranges.  But, I’ve wanted to stay at Wynn for years, and I am so glad I finally had this opportunity.
