American Airlines has provided an Iowa man with $1,000 in compensation plus an additional $500 for his ruined clothing after he sat in a urine soaked seat. The passenger was also refunded the miles he redeemed for his St. Louis (STL) to Des Moines (DSM) flight on January 12th.
According to the passenger, about one hour into the flight, he noted that his clothes were soaked from the First Class seat. He says a flight attendant provided him with blankets and a plastic bag to create a barrier. The flight attendant apparently told him that the elderly passenger on a previous flight “must have missed” the restroom. Upon arrival, he was given pajamas and a $200 travel voucher.
“Our aircraft cleaners are trained to look for visible items like trash left on the seats, floor and seatback pockets. We regret that the cleaners did not detect that this particular seat was wet. If our customer service agents or flight crew had been notified before the flight, we would have removed the affected seat cushion and replaced it with a new, clean one,” an American Airlines representative said.
The passenger says he’s learned his lesson…
“I’ll check my seat first before I sit down. I don’t want any more surprises.”
