An 23-year-old American Airlines flight attendant has been arrested by the FBI after pretending to be a hero by putting out a fire on AA 1418 from Dallas (DFW) to Detroit (DTW). The flight attendant had previously told many stories to the FBI about how the fire started but eventually admitted to setting the fire with a Bic lighter and paper towels. From USA Today:
According to documents filed in U.S. District Court, after putting out the fire, the flight attendant exited the bathroom, stood in the hallway for several minutes and pretended to discover a fire. He then extinguished the remaining smoldering paper towels with a fire extinguisher after declaring an emergency to the other flight attendants. The captain was notified. The control tower was alerted and the aircraft was granted emergency status to land at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. No one was injured.
On his flight back to Dallas after his initial court appearance, he was ordered to remain seated for the flight back to Dallas and was joined by an AA corporate security officer. He won’t be in the sky anytime soon, the flight attendant is also restricted from boarding any airplane without court permission.
