I try to never take for granted that I can be in Europe from New York in as little as 6 hours…and just how long and tough (especially during the winter) that journey was prior to flying. To that end, if you want to experience an Atlantic crossing and are looking for a solid deal, repositioning sailings during the fall and spring are the way to go. The major lines move some of their ships to the Caribbean for the winter and the Mediterranean for the summer. As the Boston Globe reports, there are many benefits as well:
Because they involve crossing the Atlantic, these tend to be longer than typical cruises, sometimes extending beyond two weeks. But they also offer unique itineraries and great values. Beyond the savings, repositioning cruises offer customers a rare thing: peace and quiet. These cruises give you the opportunity to embrace your down time. Because of the extended days at sea, cruise lines often schedule more on-board activities, such as guest lecturers and live entertainment.
Just how many days at sea? Well with Holland America’s Barcelona to Fort Lauderdale crossing, you’ll get two days at sea as you sail towards the Azores and then another six full days before you arrive in Florida.
