Wow, can you believe it’s been almost six years since the 787 Dreamliner entered service? Boeing is apparently gearing up for a big official announcement of their new “middle-market” jet. Many in the industry are referring to it as the 797, which would be the next in a series that dates back 60 years to the 707. The aircraft will seat between 220-270 passengers for flights up to 5,200 nautical miles and about 10 hours of flying time. It will specifically fit the need of congested long and dense domestic routes, but it will also be efficient enough for medium-range flights connecting the US to some European cities. Boeing says the jet will fill a gap between their 737 and 787.
Despite recent spats between Boeing and Delta, Delta CEO Ed Bastian said he wants to be the first to fly the new 797.
“You’re going to see us participate in Boeing’s middle-of-the-market campaign,” Bastian said. “I hope that we’re going to be a launch customer on that program as well.”
Delta would use the 797 to replace again 757s and 767s on long domestic routes and midrange international flights. Of course, Delta’s recent decision to order 100 A321neos will also help to replace aging 757s in addition to older MD-90s and A320s
