Italy to Fine Tourists Who Save a Chair or Umbrella on the Beach

Hopefully Caribbean resorts follow Italy’s lead, it would certainly help my mom who feels compelled to wake up at 6AM while on vacation to reserve seats because they are all taken by 9AM at many of the resorts we visit.

Newsweek reports that Italy is cracking down on individuals who reserve chairs and umbrellas on public beaches. Thos who reserve chairs or umbrellas prior to 830AM can receive a fine of up to €200.

On Saturday, the Livorno coastguard in western Tuscany seized 37 deck and beach chairs, 30 umbrellas, towels and even some bathing suits, according to a report in newspaper La Repubblica.

Italian authorities say they are looking to create a fair and safe environment for everyone who wants to enjoy the beach. Interesting fact – reserving a spot on the beach dates back to WWII in Italy.

After that conflict, tourists started traveling to Italy again and competition for deckchairs and umbrellas soon became fierce.
