Amtrak’s Acela Express “sometimes” hits speeds as high as 150 miles per hour, Shanghai’s Maglev travels up to 268 miles per hour, but Japan’s new maglev train will hit speeds over 300 mph! During a test run back in November, one hundred passengers got to experience the new train on a 27 mile run. The maglev trains are even faster than Japan’s bullet trains which top out at 200 mph. The trains are expected to be operational in 2027 and will cut travel time in half, linking Tokyo’s Shinagawa Station with Nagoya in about 40 minutes, a journey which currently takes approximately 80 minutes. A direct flight from Tokyo to Nagoya is 65 minutes and so the train will truly be faster…even without accounting for security.

Speaking as a maglev dead-ender, I’m certainly no fan of conventional Amtrak’s speed capabilities, but since it’s the premier intercity rail connector in the USA, let’s give it its due: the Acela Express trains hit 150 mph / 241 km/h every day, on every run, in two sections of track, starting outside Providence, Rhode Island and then again farther along, in Massachusetts.
Then again, having ridden on the high-speed maglev in Japan, I can’t wait to see it running along the same Northeast corridor some day. That’ll be a treat.
