JetBlue is running a promotion, where they will give you a 15% rebate on redeemed TrueBlue points when you book an award ticket. You will have to register for this offer, and book your flights before November 14, 2016. Only flights between November 10, 2016 and January 14, 2017 are eligible for the rebate, and existing reservations are NOT eligible.
JetBlue is a transfer partner with a number of credit card and hotel programs. You can transfer American Express Membership Rewards, where 250 MR points yield 200 TrueBlue points. Citi ThankYou recently added JetBlue as a partner, where you can transfer 1000 ThankYou points to 800 TrueBlue points if you have a Prestige, Premier, or Chairman card. If you have a ThankYou Preferred or Citi Forward card, your transfer rate will be 1000 ThankYou points to 500 TrueBlue points.
JetBlue’s program is semi-revenue based, so TrueBlue points have variable value, depending on the fare of the ticket. You can redeem 1 TrueBlue point for up to 1.89 cents on most flights. This means that at the best transfer rate, you are really only getting ~1.5 cents per ThankYou point or Membership Rewards point. However, under this promo, you will get 15% of the points back, so you can get up to ~1.78 cents per TY or MR point on most flights. That’s still not all that amazing, but if you’re planning on using TrueBlue points anyway, this is a good offer.
With that said, sometimes you can find some really good value out of TrueBlue points redemptions. For example, JetBlue has a bunch of flights from New York-JFK to Havana, Cuba (HAV) in early December that are going for $99 one-way. You can also redeem 3,500 TrueBlue points + $5.60 in taxes/fees for those flights. Here’s a flight on December 12.
With special pricing like this flight, you will be getting:
- $93.4 ($99 – $5.60) in value for 3,500 TrueBlue points
- That’s 93.4 / 3500 = 2.67 cents in value per TrueBlue point
- Factoring in the 15% rebate, you can get 93.4 / 3500 * (1 – 0.15) = 3.14 cents per TrueBlue point
If you’re transferring ThankYou or Membership Rewards points, this is how the math works out:
- 4,375 TY or MR points = 3,500 TrueBlue Points
- 3,500 TrueBlue points for $93.40 in value
- That’s 93.4 / 4375 = 2.13 cents in value per MR or TY point
- Factoring in the 15% rebate, you can get 93.4 / 4375 * (1 – 0.15) = 2.51 cents per MR or TY point
Keep in mind, though, that you’re not really getting the MR or TY points back, but rather getting TreuBlue points back. So you might have to deal with a small amount of residual TrueBlue points in your account that don’t have substantial value unless you transfer more in.
It’s worth noting that if you have a JetBlue Plus card from Barclaycard, you get 10% of your points back already. That is stackable with this offer, so you could potentially be getting 25% of your points back. So using the same example, you could be getting 93.4 / 3500 * (1 – 0.25) = 3.56 cents per TrueBlue point back, which is an incredible value.
Obviously whether you can derive value from this promotion depends on the specific flight you have in mind. But as you can see from the above example, there are great redemptions to be had with this offer. Let us know if you find any especially good deals in the comments below!
