This Airline Allows You to Gift Elite Status Free – and More!

by Miles Jackson

There’s some great news for one airline’s elite members during this pandemic. As we know, a lot of travelers have been grounded due to the Coronavirus and the subsequent travel restrictions. For a limited time, JetBlue elites can gift elite status free to someone of their choosing. If you’re a current Mosaic member, you may give the gift of Mosaic to another. They’ll enjoy all Mosaic travel perks for one year, starting on June 15, 2020 whether they fly with you or not.

I think this is a great idea to help airlines gain back capacities once the public begins flying again. By offering a gift of free elite status, JetBlue incentivizes more consumers to fly.

Gifting requests must be submitted by June 1, 2020.  Terms apply.

JetBlue Offering Some Other Promotions During COVID19

JetBlue provides some ways to take the sting out of reduced travel right now.

The New York based airline has offered an elite status extension, plus reduced qualification requirements for those seeking to earn status in 2020. In addition, their Double Points promotion helps flyers earn TrueBlue points at an accelerated pace for new ticket purchases (up through January 4, 2021.)

Elite Status Extension

Anyone who qualified for Mosaic based upon flights taken in 2019 will automatically have their status extended through 2021. Those who earned Mosaic status based upon JetBlue/Barclays credit card spend will not per the company’s communications.

JetBlue is Offering a Double Points Promotion

JetBlue is offering double points on all tickets purchased by January 15 for travel by January 4, 2021. Here’s the details on that promotion:

TrueBlue members will earn double base points on qualifying bookings for JetBlue-operated flights booked 5/14/20–6/15/20, for travel 5/14/20–1/4/21. For Blue Basic fares, that’s 2 points per dollar (vs. the usual 1 point). For Blue fares and above, including Mint, that’s 6 points per dollar (vs. the usual 3 points). No pre-registration required. Terms apply.

Earning TrueBlue Mosaic Status in 2020

Like most of the major U.S. airlines, JetBlue makes it easier to earn elite status in 2020. Specifically, it’s reducing the elite qualifying thresholds by 50%.

For the 2020 program year, you can earn Mosaic status through any of these three tracks:

  • Earning 7,500 qualifying TrueBlue base points
  • Earning 6,000 qualifying TrueBlue base points and 15 flight segments
  • $50,000 in annual net purchases on the JetBlue Plus card (this hasn’t changed for 2020)

Any member crossing one of these thresholds in 2020 will have status valid through Dec. 31, 2021. Additionally, you’ll earn the bonus 15,000 TrueBlue points upon qualification, regardless of the qualification method you fulfill.

Current Mosaic members whose status is now extended through 2021 won’t receive the bonus 15,000 TrueBlue points unless they requalify at the lowered thresholds. Though the bonus may not be a huge incentive to fly with JetBlue through the rest of the year, it’s still nice to be within reach for half of the usual flight activity.

The UpShot

Many elites have had to put their travel plans on hold during the COVID19 pandemic. It’s nice to see that JetBlue has responded to the concerns of many with these great offers. The elite extension and lower threshold numbers probably are expected of most airlines. It’s nice to see that JetBlue went a step beyond offering up their Double Points promotion.

Gifting elite status free is another brilliant idea to get folks back into those aircraft seats once travel takes off again.
