Marriott Tech Updates – Replace Your Own Key, Txt for Towels, Order Food to Room/Pool

by Adam

Marriott held a “Digital Demo” week in Austin the first week of July, unveiling many tech improvements coming to the chain. On display was a kiosk that allows guests to re-key a card or get a spare key without waiting at the front desk via a code generated from a mobile device. Improvements to the Marriott app are set to include the ability to order food to your room, bar, or pool and the option to text guest services for extra towels or any other requests. As reported by Fortune one of the most exciting updates was the addition of wireless power stations.

The hotels are adding wireless power (the ability to charge a device just by setting it on or near a charging pad as opposed to plugging it in) to some lobbies. The hotel is using the Qi (pronounced Chi) standard according to spokesman John Wolf, who said the chain is considering the technology as part of the rooms. “We’ll have to see how the technology matures, but it’s certainly exciting and on our radar,” he said. However, wireless power—in the lobbies or the rooms—isn’t something that Marriott has mandated as part of a brand standard, which means that travelers may or may not get a chance to see this particular future in action.
