Marriott/Starwood Testing Shared Communal Rooms for Every 4 Guest Rooms

by Adam

Want to relive the college experience? Well, as per USA Today, Marriott and Starwood are testing communal rooms at select Element properties. The rooms will be located at the center of four guest rooms. Each of the guest rooms will be standard with private beds etc, but the communal room will house a shared lounge, dining room, and kitchen for working together on projects or simply hanging out.

“We took a look at why people travel and what people need,” says Toni Stoeckl, vice president of lifestyle brands at Marriott International. “Our lobbies have become more communal and social hubs, but we saw a need for something in between. There are a lot of opportunities for people to have their shared common space and be together but still have their private space.”

USA Today also reports that Element will test a portable wine cart that auto pours when activated by a hotel room key!

In what world am I to expect them to add a room as large as that in the photo as a free amenity at a 1 to 4 ratio. While the concept is a fair excercise in imaginary perks it will be space costly and impossible based on staff and security concerns.
If this were 1 per floor I would possibly believe it while still having the same concerns. I can imagine this is the beginning of dismantling the full kitchen concept that is the base of a residence Inn or Homewood suite.
