Uber Driver Assaulted at LaGuardia By Other Uber Drivers

by Eric

On Super Bowl Sunday, an Uber driver named Justin (who, for obvious reasons, has chosen not to reveal his last name), was hit in the face with a traffic cone during a confrontation with approximately 15 drivers who were staging a protest at the airport.  Across the United States, ridesharing drivers for companies like Uber and Lyft are often waiting in a remote lot until they are requested.

The NY Daily News reported on this incident.  The driver reported that he was heading out of LaGuardia Airport’s Lot 7 to pick up his Uber passenger when other Uber drivers started to bang on his car.  This is where Justin made a mistake: instead of driving to a safe location to report the incident, he exited his vehicle and was quickly hit with the bottom of a traffic cone that struck him in the right side of his mouth.  Justin reported that the wound needed five stitches to close.  After he was struck, Justin wisely left his vehicle and reported the incident to a security guard at the lot.  The Port Authority Police Department is investigating the complaint and there have been no arrests so far.

Angry Uber drivers had threatened that they were planning on disrupting the Super Bowl festivities as much as possible in San Francisco, and across the US, though there were multiple reports afterwards indicating that it was not as successful as Uber drivers had hoped.  Uber has recently cut fares across the United States, and drivers are reportedly unhappy about these unexpected cuts.
