Uber used to have a function on the accounts page where you could purchase Uber Gift Cards—I remember doing so when there was an American Express Offer for Uber.

In November 2015, however, Uber suspended that functionality. You can still purchase rides for others through UberEvents, where you can purchase rides in advance for your guests at an event. Well, it looks like Uber may have suspended the function because they are planning on rolling out physical gift cards.

You will be able to buy Uber gift cards in over 35,000 US retail locations, including Walmart, CVS, and Target. The cards come in three formats: $25, $50, or a variable value one, where you can load anywhere between $15 and $200. Check to see where your closest retailer carrying the card is. Online sales of gift cards will also be rolling out soon. It’s worth noting that these Uber gift cards can only be used in the US.

Many credit cards, like the Chase Sapphire Reserve, the Citi ThankYou Premier, and the American Express Premier Rewards Gold, earn bonuses on travel purchases. Uber partners with a few companies to offer extra incentives. For example, when you link your SPG and Uber accounts, you earn 1 Starpoint for every dollar spent on an Uber ride. With the Capital One QuickSilver card, you get every 10th ride free with Uber, up to $15.

So far, the most appealing way might be to purchase these at CVS, since drug stores are earning 5x points with Chase Freedom from October to December (thanks for reader Aaron for point this out!). As they roll out physical gift cards, they might also enter more retailers that could potentially be lucrative. My local grocery store, for example, runs promotions where you earn 20 cents off a gallon of fuel for every $50 gift card purchase. With 30 gallons of gas, that represents more or less a 12% discount.

Will you be buying Uber gift cards?
