Uber Refunds Rides and Suspends Surge Pricing in PHL Following Train Accident

by Enoch

Last night, a northbound Amtrak train from DC to New York derailed near Philadelphia, causing a horrific accident with at least 6 deaths and dozens of injuries. Train 188 had seven cars and was carrying 243 passengers. The stretch of tracks where the derailment occurred was also the site of a deadly crash that took place in 1943. Our thoughts are with all that are affected.

Uber has decided to refund all rides from the area in an attempt to assist the victims and their families.

They are also continuing to suspend surge pricing in the area as people attempt to reunite with loved ones and navigate around the city. Their official statement from the app is below.

Our thoughts are with the victims of last night’s train derailment. With trains cancelled or delayed today, we have temporarily disabled surge. ETAs may be longer than usual, so please be patient. We encourage you to fare split with friends so we can connect as many Philadelphians with rides as possible.

Amtrak trains from Philadelphia to New York remain suspended, but SEPTA is honoring Amtrak tickets for travel from Philadelphia to Trenton, where passengers can transfer to New Jersey Transit trains (also honoring Amtrak tickets) onward to New York.
