Wanted Poster in San Francisco Chinatown Shames Airbnb Hosts

by Eric

The fight over whether property owners should be allowed to rent their homes on Airbnb was taken to another level recently in San Francisco, CA.

These Wanted flyers have been posted around Chinatown and boldly post the photos and names of 12 individuals who are supposedly “destroying affordable housing for immigrant, minority, & low income families.” The Chinatown area in San Francisco is known for strict zoning laws that help to protect the needs of newly arrived immigrants.

When questioned by The Guardian, one owner who rents on Airbnb (but whose photo is not on the flyer) stated that “We rather leave rooms and apartment empty rather than renting because of rent control. Once tenants move in they own the property … they have more rights than property owners.”

One individual who is on the flyer has said: “I’ve seen this flyer and have reported it to AirBnB and will be filing a police report. If I’m able to find the creator of the flyer, there will also be a lawsuit filed for slander as this is completely untrue.”

What are your thoughts on Airbnb?

This is nothing new, a favorite tactic of the SF left. Socialists have no respect for property rights, since property rights obviously run counter to their communal ideals. Besides, a good socialist is always up for a public lynching, with facts, evidence, due process, etc. optional. It’s par for the course in the belly of the beast that is SF. It’s funny that these very normal looking, law abiding citizens are demonized simply for being a property owner that wants to offset the outrageous real estate costs and regulations. They aren’t exactly the face of evil. Yet SF socialists will defend criminals who cross the border illegally, commit multiple crimes, and are back on the street.

I would care less if I was an owner. The owner is still getting money and the complainers are still complaining. Who’s winning.

Rent control is simply theft and does not allow the market to clear itself. In San Francisco there are fewer than a million people. If they built say 2m units there would be no problems but they don’t want to do that. They want to restrict supply in the face of demand and yet want ” affordable housing”. The fact is capitalism is what transforms things from luxuries to every day affordable items but the hard left refuses to learn

While I love the idea of airbnb, I do see the reasons why it might be a cause for concern for many reasons. Safety of both occupants and neighbors, insurance, taxes, unfair competition with actual hotels…I do stay in them on occasion.

If I had to vote I’d have to agree with the poster maker.
