Japan Airlines has a fantastic First Class product, and thanks to its partnership with Alaska Airlines, is now more attainable than ever. The catering is always stellar, the crew is extremely friendly, and you can even select a soft or firm memory foam mattress for the bed.
For the first time since 2014, Japan Airlines (JAL) is switching up its amenity kits and pajamas in First Class. Currently, JAL provides First Class passengers with an amenity kit by Loewe, the Spanish fashion brand. But starting March 28, 2017, customers will receive a new kit by Porsche Design. The semi-hard shell container will come in two colors: red on flights from Japan, and gray on flights to Japan. The kits will include a dental kit, earplugs, eye masks, hair brush, “moisture mask,” and pocket tissues.
To be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of these semi-hardsided kits, since I find them to be a little more difficult to reuse. The design also doesn’t say First Class to me. In fact, it reminds me of the old Business Class amenity kit from Thai Airways…
Anyway, the skincare products provided in the kit will also be Porsche Design-branded. This is pretty strange, considering Porsche Design isn’t known for skincare, and only markets an extremely limited range of products (like aftershave lotions). But regardless, you can expect to find a hand and body cream, lip balm, and a facial spray included in the red or gray kits.
Now, I say Porsche Design skincare products in the kit, because Japan Airlines actually offers an additional set of skincare products separately. To that end, JAL will continue to offer a separate set of skincare products alongside the amenity kit. For men, this means a Shiseido product set containing a toner, hydrator, and cleanser. For women, JAL will supply a Clé de Peau Beauté (high end Shiseid0) “Illuminating Concentrate” set that retails for $30 a set.
Along with the new amenity kits, JAL is also updating their pajamas offering. The new sleepwear will also be Porsche-branded, and come in a reusable tote. I am a big fan of the old JAL pajamas; they were substantial and super comfortable, so let’s hope these are as good as the old ones!
JAL only operates a handful of routes with the 777-300ER, their only aircraft with a First Class cabin. You can experience the new amenity kits and pajamas on flights between Tokyo and New York-JFK, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, London, and Paris.
JAL is part of oneworld, so there are plenty of ways to book a First Class flight with them using miles and points. For example, a one-way trip from New York to Tokyo will set you back 80,000 American AAdvantage miles. However, you can book the same flight with Alaska Mileage Plan miles, at just 70,000 miles one-way. With Alaska’s generous routing rules, you can even do a stopover in Tokyo, and continue onto other destinations in Asia (though some destinations in Asia will require 75,000 miles one-way).
