It’s a unique week when readers write in wanting to know how to get some easy Delta SkyMiles.  However, it seems like the two posts late last week on relatively easy award flights to Southeast Asia and Australia using Delta SkyMiles on the China Southern A380, combined with the reduction (temporary?) of fuel surcharges on Virgin Australia, have really sparked interest in obtaining SkyPesos! Most of the requests have included intentions on flying to the Maldives or Australia with some Bangkok and Singapore trips thrown in as well.

Now, if you already have Membership Rewards points, you can easily transfer those into your SkyMiles account, though right now it might be a better option to transfer those points to KLM/Air France’s Flying Blue with a limited time 35% transfer bonus (through Sept. 16th). They too are SkyTeam partners with China Southern and should be able to book the same awards.  Diners Club USA is also a transfer option.

FlyingBlue requires 100K r/t US-Australia in economy and 200K in business. That means economy works out better through FlyingBlue with the transfer bonus and business is just barely better (148150 transferred MR to FlyingBlue, but I guess you’d have to do 149,000). Fuel surcharges should be the same through either program, and using FlyingBlue you could book online (at least for China Southern via CAN). You can’t fly Virgin Australia with FlyingBlue miles, of course.

I’ve got both of the delta cards and waiting to get the top card soon. I just closed my personal delta card, how long do u have to wait to be eligible to sign up again?

@Grant – A few years ago it was “never”, however it’s now generally accepted that you can now receive the same bonus once every 12 months.
