How Far Do Football Fans Travel to Watch Their Favorite NFL Team?

We all would like to think that our favorite NFL team is the best, and that fans across the country are clamoring to travel to _____ (insert stadium here).  Vivid Seats (a ticket broker) used their data from the 2014 football season to chart the travel of football fans from every state to see where fans from that state most commonly traveled to during the season.

The data is interesting.  A few things that I noticed:

  • Geography plays an important role.  For example, football fans in Alaska love the Seattle Seahawks, while Wyoming citizens love their Denver Broncos.
  • Weather plays a role too.  So a large number of fans in New England traveled to warmer climates (like California) to watch the Patriots play, while mixing in a break from the snow and the cold.
  • Despite a bitter rivalry between the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys, there seem to be a lot of 49ers fans in Texas.
  • Also contrary to public opinion, Pittsburgh Steeler fans don’t travel as well as Philadelphia Eagle fans.

How far have you traveled to watch an NFL game?
