The BBC and AFP are reporting that both Air France and Lufthansa have stopped flying over Egypt’s Sinai peninsula while authorities investigate the crash of the Kogalymavia jet carrying 217 people that went down earlier in the day. Both airlines say it is a precaution until more is known.
The Islamic State affiliate in Egypt has taken responsibility, but Russian authorities say the claim is not valid. Military experts have also spoken out that militants in the region do not have access to weapons that could hit an aircraft flying at 30,000 feet or higher. The jet was flying at that altitude when it lost contact.
