Well, this is an interesting problem for American Airlines, the Cuban government is refusing entry and thereby overnight privileges to any Cuban-American AA flight crew member as per the Miami Herald. American didn’t discover this until their first re-established flight to Varadero. On that flight a Cuban-American was denied entry on grounds that he did not have a Cuban passport, a requirement for anyone who left the country after 1970. American questioned authorities as to what would happen in a mechanical delay and was told only in extenuating circumstances would there be any exceptions.
So in an interesting twist, AA had to identify Cuban-American employees and remove them from the Cuba flight schedules…with pay. This was the memo sent to AA managers:
“Please remember that those who are Cuban born should be removed with pay from Cuba flights until we can verify what requirements the Cuban government has for these crewmembers.”
