Of the big three Middle East carriers, Qatar might not be the most well known one, but they are expanding like crazy. The airline was only founded in 1997, but already serves over 150 destinations. Just in 2016 alone, they are launching 14 new destinations.
In a year when both Boeing and Airbus are seeing mostly decreased order volumes, Qatar is continuing their bullish expansion. Just today, Qatar Airways announced that they have placed an order with Boeing for 30 787-9 Dreamliner and 10 777-300ER. These widebody aircrafts come at a retail price of $11.6 Billion. In addition, Qatar also signed a letter of intent to purchase 60 737 MAX aircrafts from Boeing, valued at another $6.9 Billion (at list price).
Qatar announced deal with Boeing to purchase up to 100 aircrafts
The airline held a press conference in Washington DC for the announcement. The CEO, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, said:
Qatar Airways, already one of the fastest growing airlines in the history of aviation, today announces a significant and historic aircraft order that will power our future growth for the years and the decades ahead. Boeing has proven to be a valuable partner, and today’s announcement is testament to our appreciation of the quality of their product and their dedication to providing world class customer service.
This is one of the largest fleet announcement in Qatar’s history. These new airplanes will join Qatar’s current fleet of 84 Boeing planes, which were all delivered over the last 9 years.
