Peanuts and Southwest Airlines have been a synonymous cliché since the airline was founded in 1967. Watch a catering truck pull up to a Southwest plane and…wait for it…someone says “there’s the peanut truck”. But, like Toys-R-Us and plastic straws, SWA peanuts join a slew of 20th century cultural icons on their way out this year.
Southwest will stop serving peanuts in August, full stop, according to Fox News Tuesday and confirmed by others. The airline cites growing concern over peanut allergies on flights.
Peanut allergies have cause strife for the Dallas-based carrier in recent years. Last year a Texas family blamed the airline for a life-threatening allergic reaction in their 9-year-old son, in an interview with the Houston, Texas NBC News affiliate.
The Department of Transportation floated a nationwide peanut ban in 2011, but was stymied at the lack of clinical research on peanut allergy health effects needed to legally justify a ban, per CNN.
