It’s been 30 years since United made a $700 million+ deal with Pan Am to acquire 10 Asia Pacific routes. Prior to the deal, Pan Am’s only Pacific routes were Seattle – Hong Kong and Seattle – Tokyo. The deal added the following routes all at once:
- Auckland
- Beijing
- Manila
- Melbourne
- Osaka
- Seoul
- Shanghai
- Singapore
- Sydney
- Taipei
Many of these still operate today as United celebrates the anniversary.

I usually fly AA/JAL ORD-NRT-MNL, but not UA because it doesn’t make sense to go ORD-HNL-GUM-MNL or ORD-NRT-GUM-MNL…
You can take UA/ANA from ORD-NRT-MNL
