Goh Choon Phong, Singapore Airlines CEO, has for the second time in the last week discussed his desire to restart non-stop service between Singapore and New York (no mention of Newark or JFK). The airline is currently talking with both Airbus and Boeing to find an appropriate and cost efficient aircraft for the route. From Bloomberg:
“We, of course, want it as soon as possible,” Goh said in an interview with Bloomberg Television’s Haslinda Amin. “There isn’t really a commercially viable aircraft that could fly nonstop.” Reviving nonstop flights to the U.S. will help the carrier fill a gap in its network that’s benefiting Asia-Pacific rivals Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. and Qantas Airways Ltd. The all-business-class daily flights from Singapore to Los Angeles and Newark, New Jersey, ended as the routes were not profitable with aircraft that flew with four engines, analysts said.

prestige wise, it’s great. Singapore will always command a fare premium given their reputation. But it is really hard to remove the cost of such a long flight. Too much fuel being burned to move the weight of fuel about to be burned. From purely financial position, perhaps they would be better to try to strengthen connecting traffic and flow over other US gateways.
IAH – YVR – SIN could work well, and catch all the midwest and west coast people. One stop of a few hours probably won’t make too much difference.
Singapore will never make sense to fly outside of south / southeast Asia since it would require backtracking, and there aren’t a ton of business related destinations in their vicinity.
Am I missing something here? The 777-200LR currently has the range to make EWR-SIN a reality no? Especially if they run it light like 100 seat all Biz like when they had the A340-500. I understand it’s subject to ETOPS but wouldn’t all 2-engine planes be subject to the same?

EWR – SIN is at least 9534mi, sometimes it varies when they have to fly against, or with the jetstream.
Wikipedia says 777-200lr record was 9,395mi. It seems it would barely make it.
I suspect the tailwinds helped out the original flight because A340-500 doesn’t have much better range. It also probably barely made it.
9,395 nautical miles or 10,811 Statue miles and Singspore is 9534 statue miles away according to GCmap.com
So this should be more then enough to make that trip happen
Ha ok, well then no idea why they don’t do it. I’m not sure it even makes sense to have the flight. It’s almost 19 hours, while a connecting flight through HKG to SIN is 22-23 hours, so you hardly save any time.
