At Juicy Miles our most requested awards don’t change all that much – Australia, Maldives, Seychelles, South Africa, and all over Europe in the summer. Strangely though, these last two weeks we’ve had an insane amount of requests for Bangkok (even with the current protests) specifically from SkyMiles members (disgruntled Delta Medallion member convention?). Now, we do handle quite a few BKK requests on average, though they are normally of the Singapore, Cathay Pacific, or Lufthansa First Class variety. In general, Bangkok business and economy awards aren’t all that hard to score, especially with Star Alliance (worst case scenario if somehow all the more premium Star carriers have no availability, you can always go with EgyptAir or Air China) and oneWorld – Cathay Pacific is quite easy with a little flexibility. However, if your dates and times are set in stone and you cannot change them or be even remotely flexible, you may need to consider one of the options below. They aren’t nearly as glamorous (or comfortable), but they will get you to Thailand for free.

A few examples with a NYC or LAX departure: Is Delta not releasing any seats on their US flights to Tokyo or the Tokyo – Bangkok connection? Does Korean have no seats on your travel day? You might be forced to consider Aeroflot, China Airlines, China Eastern, or China Southern. All have quite decent availability, just be sure to set reasonable expectations for in-flight products and connection times. I’d probably choose China Southern on their A380s, though Aeroflot on one of their A330s or B777s isn’t so horrible either. Unfortunately, none of these can be booked on and you’ll have to call in for assistance.

I would just caution anyone against flying China Airlines. My spouse got food poisoning the last time we flew this airline. Granted this was 6 years ago, but anecdotally, the airline hasn’t improved its food.
