American’s JFK-LAX/SFO Flights Introduce First Ever Pet Cabin…for real

by Adam

If you don’t travel with your pet, you may have missed the news that American introduced the first ever “pet cabin” on their transcontinental flights between New York JFK and Los Angeles / San Francisco back in August. The special pet cabin allows owners to place their dog or cat in a secure carrier in First Class. Each flight will have two dedicated spots in the First Class cabin for the pets and can accommodate carriers up to 19 by 13 by 9 inches if hard-sided. If you and your pet aren’t so fancy, all normal carry on and check options remain available.

I was in first class with a passenger who felt the need to let his small dog out of it carrier so it could spill the owners red wine which landed on my white blouse. The pet closet would have avoided that situation although I could imagine the barking. …oh my ears.

Notice the carrier is not closed, and neither is the door.

How many times you think the owners will be A-OK with the pet being that close to hand, but door shut in their face in the closet?

They should put in a bar at the top, for the monkey to hang from. Or jackets, because it’ll actually be used as closet space.
