It’s only been about one month since the post – Automated Passport Control Arrives @ JFK Terminal 4 went live and where we discussed Delta’s purchase of 40 automated passport kiosks at JFK T4 in an attempt to speed up the customs process. Well, the initial results certainly seem to indicate that it worked and perhaps other terminals and airports need to seriously consider a purchase. Today, Delta proclaimed that wait times were cut in half just one month into their use. From Bloomberg:

The average wait for all time slots is now 16.6 minutes, down from 34.9 minutes in October 2012, according to agency data. The average maximum wait is now 58.2 minutes, down from 97 minutes a year ago. “Cutting wait times in half is dramatic early evidence that automated kiosks work in relieving the unacceptably long wait times JFK has experienced,” said Joe Sitt, chairman ofGlobal Gateway Alliance, a trade organization advocating for improvements at New York’s airports.

During early morning periods the results were more dramatic. Between 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., passengers now wait an average of 11 minutes, down from 53 minutes in October 2012, according to agency data. Maximum wait times in that slot have dropped to 25 minutes, compared with 163 minutes a year ago.

I have global entry but on my last trip decided to use the kiosk just to see since I was one of the first people to come off of the plane. It was AMAZING! Extremely similar to the Global Entry kiosks and process and a breeze for regular travelers. I hope they expand this program for all US Cities and Citizens.
