Travel and Bookstores: A Magical Match

by Shelli Stein

Do you enjoy traveling with a special destination in mind? Maybe it’s a museum, an historical site, a wonder of the world, a restaurant, or perhaps London for the theater? How about adding bookstores to that list? Yes, a bookstore!

We’ve all noticed that bookstores, and independent bookstores in particular, are most unfortunately becoming a rare breed. I’ve written before about the wonderful benefits of reading and talked about reading as a part of our travel lifestyle. I’ve even written about special bookstores I’ve come upon in my travels. I confess: I love bookstores.

Pro tip: Staying healthy is key to enjoying your travels. Here’s my SECRET, and I’ve even got a 10% discount for my readers!

When I’m traveling, even when in countries where their bookstores are home to books in languages I don’t speak or read, I find browsing through bookstores such a pleasure. After all, book covers are works of art. And it’s fun to see titles I recognize and notice how they get translated. And it’s meaningful, as travelers, that we get to experience how other cultures love books just as I do!

How To Find Independent Bookstores

Recently I came upon a great website that displays a map of independent bookstores. The map includes bookstores in the United States. It may expand to Canada at some point in the future as well.

There’s much more on the site that is worth looking at, though. It lists the bookstores that are recently closed as well as the ones that have been recently added to the map. The site has interesting content articles and it spotlights different bookstores with more in-depth articles about the stores themselves.

Pro Tip: Do you Pruvo all your hotels stays? If not, do what I do and let Pruvo monitor your reservations for price drops. It’s free and it’s the easiest way to save money on all your hotel rooms.

Looking for a First Edition book or some bookstore trivia?

Then you’ll find iheartbookstores.com a great resource!

I know for many readers these sorts of sites don’t float your boat, yet for those of us who find bookstores magical places, I wanted to make sure you knew about this site. Enjoy!!
