While like many of you I haven’t taken any of the trips I had planned for this past year, I am looking and planning ahead. After all, I am wedded to travel. I decided one of my first planning ahead tasks would be to review and assess my travel accessories and gear. In my wedded state, maybe I needed to replace something old with something new, return something borrowed, get something new, and stop feeling so blue!
Wish I had a mile or point for every time I ask myself the question, “What should I pack?” Then I realize I do have a group of travel accessories that are my go-to ones, the ones that must be packed, some of which I’ve been wedded to for so long I can’t imagine my travel life without them.
Here’s a list of my top nine awesome travel accessories.
9 Awesome Travel Accessories
Buff UV Headwear
I know what many people think. What’s so special about a tube of polyester fabric? Heck, I’ve even offered to gift people a Buff and they say “no thanks.” They are missing out! Why? Buffs are so versatile, can be worn and used in a huge range of ways, and take up almost no space. They have so many uses I had to write a full article on WHY a Buff, and even got my cousin to model the Buff for all of you! Buff Headwear
Belkin Mini Three Outlet Travel Charger
Seems like travel not only empowers us, but also requires that we power up. Some device always needs charging. Gaining access to enough outlets for charging our tech isn’t always possible. This Belkin accessory doesn’t take up much room, swivels, and has two USB ports so you can eliminate bringing along other adaptors. Order from Amazon
Grayl Ultralight Water Purifier
Playing it safe makes traveling with a water bottle a must-have item. Traveling with a water bottle also means saving money and not using so much plastic. This Grayl is one of my top choices. It’s a plus that it comes with a filter for heavy metals and bacteria. Get your water bottle at Amazon.
There have been a few times when I’ve forgotten to throw my travel towel in my luggage. Always regret it because like the Buff, a travel towel has many uses and comes in handy when you least expect it. Travel towels pack up small and are light. Hmm, I’m sensing a theme as I review and assess why I choose my travel accessories carefully 🙂 If you don’t have a travel towel yet, or don’t like the one you have, it’s likely because many of the travel towels don’t feel like the cotton towels you use at home. This towel by Sea to Summit is different. It checks all the boxes: feels like cotton yet has the technical features of the best travel towels. You can order your towel from Amazon.
For years I went without sunglasses. Now I wear them most days. Especially when I travel, even if I don’t think I’ll need them, I always have them with me. After all, who doesn’t want to maximize their time outdoors when traveling? True, there are lots of different price points and brand choices for sunglasses, but whatever your choice, UV protection for your eyes is what it’s all about. I prefer SMITH sunglasses and also recommend REVO. Both these brands have served me well even in the brightest scenarios. Beach, mountains, and urban environments too, sunglasses allow my eyes to relax and see clearly. Many sunglasses to choose from at Amazon.
Noise Cancelling Headphones
With so many of us working from home, a quality set of headphones is essential. If you enjoy listening to music, audio books, or podcasts, whether at home or when traveling, these Bose Quiet Comfort headphones are the best. I do travel a lot and expect my travel pace will pick up again when restrictions are lifted. Frankly, I don’t at all understand people who spend time on planes or in other noisy environments without these Bose headphones. Many years ago I was in an accident and since then my hearing has been somewhat diminished. So I protect my hearing at all costs. The sound quality of this model is excellent and the noise canceling feature is the best! I’ve been using noise canceling headphones since 2009 and this is my number one choice. This is the model I use.
The Kindle became a must-have when my nephew got one and wouldn’t stop nagging me about getting one for myself. Love to read, love my Kindle! When I’m home I’m for sure a real book reader, but I’m traveling a lot too. That makes the small Kindle Paperwhite with its backlight for reading at night the perfect choice. Order from Amazon.
Moleskine Classic Journal
Not everyone wants to keep notes about what they experience when they travel, but many people do. Before I started carrying a Moleskine notebook I was always scrounging for paper to write on. It was a system that was not only messy and a very haphazard way of jotting down what I wanted to remember, but it was also ridiculous to then try and read my writing from bits of scrap paper and napkins. Okay, enough true confessions. When I finally broke down and started buying Moleskine journals, I actually found myself writing more. And in case you aren’t aware, keeping a journal is good for your health! Order your Moleskine at Amazon.
You’ve heard me rave about Yoga Toes many times before. And I just got a new pair. Gosh, did I actually start using them more than 10 years ago?? They come with me on every trip and I put them on every night when I’m home, relaxing on the couch. If you’ve never given them a try, now’s the time. And if you know anyone who complains about foot pain or tired feet, these make a great gift. Your feet will love you for it! Order from Amazon
It’s a valuable practice to review the travel products/gear/goodies I use and recommend. I often test items, eliminate some, and add others. Some are tried-and-true and some are great new additions. It feels good to recently have both added and subtracted a few different items to simplify my travel accessories. If you have any items you’ve added or subtracted to your fun travel goodies and gear list, let me know. I enjoy testing new products and gear, and then of course sharing my choices with you!
